S1 SOCIAL SUBJECTS
Young people have 4 periods of Social Studies in S1. During this time they will cover aspects of Geography, History and Modern Studies in Scotland, the UK, Europe and the wider world covering Level 3 of the Broad General Education.
The Social Subjects Course enables young people to:
- develop their understanding of the history, heritage and culture of Scotland, and an appreciation of local and national heritage within the world
- broaden their understanding of the world by learning about human activities and achievements in the past and present
- develop their understanding of my own values, beliefs and cultures and those of others
- develop their understanding of the principles of democracy and citizenship through experience of critical and independent thinking
- explore and evaluate different types of sources and evidence
- learn how to locate, explore and link periods, people and events in time and place
- learn how to locate, explore and link features and places locally and further afield
- engage in activities which encourage enterprising attitudes
- develop an understanding of concepts that stimulate enterprise and influence business
- establish firm foundations for lifelong learning and for further specialised study and careers
Skills developed in Social Studies include:
- Describing information from a variety of sources including written, graphs, diagrams, maps, tables, pictures
- Explaining answers by giving reasons why
- Comparing information from different sources
- Placing events in chronological order
- Decision making and supporting with evidence
- Map Skills including grid referencing, contours and map symbols
- Making an informed conclusion and supporting with evidence
- Research techniques using websites, textbooks, interviews, surveys and fieldwork
- Processing techniques including drawing graphs, diagrams, pictures, maps and written information
- Presentation techniques including discussion, debate, PowerPoints, talks, presentation boards, formal reports and leaflets
